The day began with a Water Smart irrigation presentation by Craig Borland of the Toro Company. Craig’s presentation focused on Toro’s Precision™ Series Spray Heads, Nozzles and Smart Control Systems, including Climate Logic™, Sentinel™ and their new Soil Moisture Sensor.

Holding CLIA, CID, CIC, CWCM, and EPA–WaterSensecertifications, Craig has worked for Toro Irrigation/Irritrol for the past 18 years. During that time, he has managed the Controller Repair Department and the Service Center Repair program. He also held positions as Warranty Administrator, Inside Sales rep, and is currently working as a Sr. Customer Resource Specialist in the Irrigation Division’s Customer Resource Center.

Currently, Craig provides technical support for the Engineering, Legal, Technical Support and Marketing departments, and the Micro division. He has also taught classes for the Irrigation

Association, and serves on the I.A. Education Foundation Committee as a Subject Matter Expert.

To finish the day, attendees learned the ins and outs of designing LED lighting systems with John Higo, Lighting Manager of Turf Care Products Canada and Raymond Josephian, Lighting Sales Manager of Illumicare Group Limited.

John and Raymond’s presentation covered topics such as LED Lamp Driver Systems, Lumens vs. Watts, Total Cost of Ownership over the Life of an LED Lighting System and How to Design with Colour Temperatures.

All attendees walked away with a better understanding of LEED requirements and how to build their business using the newest irrigation and lighting technologies, as well as an irrigation certification of completion for a one day class, and a handy tool from Irritrol.

International Partners in Excellence Awards

In 1984 Toro introduced for the U.S. a measurement and recognition program called Partners in
Excellence. Partners in Excellence (PIE) provides guidelines and formulas for business
management that help distributors focus on key elements that build the foundation for a
successful business. Distributor performance against specific criteria is tracked and results are
rewarded on an annual basis.

For 2011, Toro is pleased to have extended the Partners in Excellence program to our
International business with a new International Partners in Excellence program.

The object of the Partners in Excellence program is to:

•  Provide simple, meaningful criteria that measures results;
•  Provide criteria that can be measured regionally;
•  Be able to collect and fairly score that criteria;
•  Provide best business practices to augment and facilitate improvement; and
•  Recognize results.

Eligible International distributors are rated on their performance in three areas: Market Share,
Financial Health and Customer Care.

Distributor of Excellence awards are given for three geographic areas: Europe/Middle East
(EMEA), Asia Pacific (APAC) and Canada/Latin America. A Gold Level of Excellence award
will be given to any distributors who score within 3% of the highest score for their geographic
region. A bronze bull with a marble base is awarded.

Our top honor, the Distributor of Excellence award – a bronze bull that is custom-made by
artist Wally Shoop, is presented to the distributor with the highest overall Partners in Excellence
score.

The event offered landscape lighting professionals a chance to network with peers and visit exhibits highlighting new and innovative landscape lighting products, as well as an up close opportunity to talk to major lighting suppliers to ask questions about new technologies.

The conference also featured a keynote presentation titled Better Illumination for Outdoor Living by Doug Alderman, LC, a respected lighting designer, who conducts lighting seminars for contractors, lighting designers, architects, landscape architects and distributors and has taught outdoor lighting classes at the college level.

Doug’s interactive session celebrated the history of outdoor light from torches and candles, to Solid-State Lighting and LEDs of today.

To close the conference, attendees participated in round table sessions to discuss the latest industry news and trends. Topics included a Design Case Study, Outdoor Power Systems, Landscape Lighting Rules & Regulations, Niche & Specialty Fixture Applications and Product and Service Sales & Pricing.

Illumicare Group Limited Transformer Prize Draw

As a special bonus to those who stopped by the Turf Care exhibit table, we offered contractors and designers the chance to submit their names to win a 300W Multi-Tap Toroidal transformer from Illumicare Group Limited.

The draw took place at Turf Care Products London office, and our lucky winner was Steve Brewer from York Nursery. Tammy Beswarick drew the winning name and Scott Sim delivered the transformer on February 21st.

Steve Brewer has been in the landscape industry for 14 years. In 2001 he began his career as a landscape labourer and moved up to a managerial position by 2002. In 2007, Steve joined the York Nursery team as the Irrigation Manager and built the irrigation division from the ground up. York Nursery’s Irrigation division now offers design, installation and maintenance of water efficient irrigation systems.

Opening 65 years ago as one of the first garden centers in the Kitchener/Waterloo area, York Nursery has been providing lawn maintenance, landscaping design and build, and snow removal services for over 30 years. Ahead of the latest trends in landscape design, York added landscape lighting services in the mid 80′s, which was a hit with their loyal landscape design clientele.
